New Zealand’s First Porous Lane Residential Parking Bay
Completion of Porous Lane parking bay in grey.
Project Overview
Client:
Homeowner, Te Atatu
Project type:
Private residential redevelopment
Duration:
5 hour installation, 1 hour coating
Project value:
Approx $20,000
Project Background
The client was redeveloping their property and wanted to create additional parking without compromising stormwater management or increasing impermeable surface area. Given the steep slope and proximity to landscaped areas, the client needed a surface that was durable, permeable, and low maintenance. The client needed something that could handle vehicle load while preventing flooding and water pooling issues.
Watersmart’s Role
Watersmart project-managed the site and provided technical consultation throughout the process.
Our team recommended Porous Lane Traffic Mix in Grey (55m²) to achieve both the desired performance and an aesthetic match with the existing concrete driveway.
We also provided guidance to the main civil contractor on base preparation, which included:
One compacted layer of GAP65, and
Two layers (100mm each) of GAP20 to ensure stability and trafficability
The right base was critical to ensure long-term performance and structural integrity on the steep gradient.
Why Watersmart Porous Lane Was Chosen
The client sought:
A permeable and flexible surface to maintain on-site water infiltration.
A lower-carbon alternative to traditional asphalt or concrete.
A low-maintenance system not prone to clogging, especially near vegetation.
Watersmart’s Porous Lane offered a solution that not only met these needs but also provided superior permeability and durability compared to traditional materials, helping avoid maintenance headaches.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge: Installing a permeable surface on a steep slope while ensuring long-term stability and resistance to raveling.
Solution: The use of the Grey Porous Lane coating not only delivered visual cohesion with the existing driveway but also provided added surface strength — reducing the risk of raveling and extending the lifespan of the installation.
Key Achievements
Successfully created a durable, permeable car park that integrates seamlessly with the existing driveway.
Enabled effective stormwater management, reducing runoff and filtering pollutants before they reach the road network.
Delivered a future-proof, sustainable solution that enhances the property’s value and resilience to flooding.
