Aquacomb Case Study – Lower Hutt

Project Details

Project Type: Residential stormwater detention installation

System Type: Aquacomb Detention Only

Location: Kotari Road, Lower Hutt

Detention Volume: 5,250L

Architect: Parsonson Architects

Installer: Jason Brown Plumbing

Project Overview

Watersmart worked alongside Jason Brown Plumbing to deliver a specialist Aquacomb detention solution for a high-end residential build in Lower Hutt. Designed to meet Wellington Water stormwater requirements, the system was installed beneath the home and deck structure where conventional detention methods were not feasible.

The project required a highly customised approach due to restricted space beneath the house piles, tight invert levels, and the need to coordinate closely with the building structure during construction.

The Challenge

The architectural design of the home created limited available space for stormwater detention infrastructure. The detention system needed to fit within confined under-deck and under-house areas while still achieving the required detention volume and maintaining access to key system components.

The project also required careful coordination between the Aquacomb pod layout, the structural pile locations, and the stormwater pipework to ensure the system could be installed effectively without compromising the build.

The Solution

Watersmart designed and supplied a customised 5,250-litre Aquacomb detention system consisting of 15 x 300mm Aquacomb pods integrated with an AquaPit inspection and control point.

The compact modular nature of Aquacomb made it possible to configure the system around the existing structural constraints beneath the home. Detailed design coordination and multiple revisions during the design phase ensured the pod arrangement, pipework, and access requirements aligned with the architectural and plumbing layout.

Watersmart’s design and commercial teams worked closely with Jason Brown Plumbing throughout the installation process, including site visits and ongoing collaboration during construction to refine the layout and resolve challenges as they arose.

Watersmart’s Role

Watersmart provided:

  • Aquacomb stormwater detention design

  • Custom pod layout coordination

  • Technical support during installation

  • Onsite collaboration with the plumbing contractor

  • Supply of the Aquacomb detention system and AquaPit components

Key Watersmart personnel included:

  • Paul Filer – Wellington Business Development Manager

  • Roger Adlam – National Commercial Manager

  • Elliot Olsen – Design Lead

Outcome

The completed solution successfully achieved the required stormwater detention performance within an extremely constrained site footprint.

By using a modular Aquacomb configuration beneath the deck and home structure, the project team was able to integrate compliant stormwater management infrastructure into a space that would otherwise have been difficult to utilise. The result was a discreet, high-performance detention solution tailored specifically to the site conditions and architectural design.
